What this is, and what it isn't

A population-weighted language map — not a political atlas.

2,200,627 dots sit on the GHS-POP 2025 settlement grid. Where a census publishes state, province, or canton shares, the dots follow that region — Catalonia, Quebec, the Indian states, southern China, Flanders. Everywhere else they follow the national mix. Format inspired by Anita Chen's language dots.

Language shares: subnational censuses (India 2011, US ACS, Canada 2021, China, Nigeria, South Africa, and European region surveys) where they exist, otherwise national censuses, as compiled for Anita Chen's language dots (anita.garden/languagedots) and placed on the GHSL grid. Family names checked against Glottolog.
